From Building Models During Childhood to Building Financial Solutions as a Career
My Story:
My journey into the A/E industry began at age 11, inspired by my uncle's city planning work and the architectural models he built. That childhood fascination led to me building models of my own with Legos and Lincoln Logs. I spent summers during college working on construction sites, where I learned how buildings are built. After graduation, I became an architect and learned how great design comes to life. But I realized that creating beautiful, functional spaces was only part of the equation. To truly serve clients and help build sustainable firms, I needed to understand the business side. Following architectural licensure, I earned my MBA and have spent three decades combining construction experience, design knowledge, and business acumen to help A/E firms thrive.
My Unique Perspective:
All CFOs understand numbers. Some understand the unique challenges of project-based businesses. But few understand the creative process that drives architecture and engineering. I speak each of these languages fluently.
Recent Role Transition:
While serving as a partner and CFO of a large, nationally recognized architecture and engineering firm, it became clear that there is a significant gap in the market. Growing A/E firms need sophisticated financial guidance, but often can't justify a full-time CFO. That's where I come in.
Differentiators:
Construction Experience: I understand how projects actually get built and where costs can spiral, as well as the nuances between design and construction.
Design Background: I know the creative process and how it impacts project timelines, resource planning, and financial forecasts.
Business Expertise: I've guided firms through every growth stage and many financial challenges.
Industry Focus: Unlike generalist CFOs, I understand A/E-specific challenges like project execution, client relationships, and professional liability.
